Hi Jim, the cold weather has had a big impact on the fishing down there. The snook season has been closed until August and the bonefish and tarpon seasons will be closed till March or April...

I guess it depends on what kind of fishing you want to do. Capt. Gary Ellis has been a famous backwater guide in those parts for many years.
As a tune up for your trip, read Bob Rich's book "Fish Fights - A Hall of Fame Quest" It will amaze you with the fishing locations, marinas, tackle shops and famous Florida Keys guides in the book. It chronicles Bob Rich's adventures to qualify for the Metropolitan South Florida Fishing Hall of Fame. Here's what he had to catch and on specific types of tackle, with difficult-to-achieve minimum weight requirements: a twenty-five-pound barracuda, a twenty-pound permit, a twenty-five-pound dorado, a blue or white marlin, a twenty-five-pound wahoo, a nine-pound bonefish, a sailfish of any weight, a six-pound largemouth bass, a one-hundred-pound tarpon, and an eighteen-pound snook. Awesome Book!

Sorry for responding so late. The cold weather last month really killed a lot of the fish in the shallow water in the Florida Bay. Several guides told me snook, bone fish and tarpon was affected by the cold weather. You need to check with the Fl wildlife division on any catch and release changes for out back fishing. We caught several yellowtail snapper off shore. We fished outriggers and kites for sailfish, but did not raise any. There are several good captains and boats for back country and offshore at Holiday Isle and Whale Harbor. I like Capt. Randy Allen on Whale Tales at whale harbor and Capt. Mel Walker on the Gotcha at Holiday Isle for offshore charters. You might want to check out the boats at World Wide Sportsman marina. If I can be of any further help, please give me a call: Skip - 803-242-5080 cell. |
