Don't know if you've been yet or not but that's a good float you're going on. I live in Indian Land and float that section all the time. Well, not the entire section. If you want to get done with that float in a day you won't have all that much time to fish. That's quite a stretch and gets slow the closer you get to the HWY9 bridge and landsford canal SP. We usually float from the dam to River Park in Rock Hill. If you're into natural bait take a four foot cast net and before you launch load up a bait bucket with shiners right there off the landing. Also have a bucket of worms as back up. Throw the shiners up in the stumps and blow downs anywhere along the river bank anywhere on your way down and hold on for big pissed cats...healthy fish too. Once you get closer to the 77 bridges the big rocks in the middle of the river around bends hold hybrids and strippers. Just before and just past 77 there is deep slow water. That's called "Sutton Bottoms" Nice big cats in there. The fish are rebounding nicely and getting healthy again south of the 77 bridge since they shut down Celanese plant but I personaly still wouldn't eat anything down stream of the 77 bridge until you get down a few miles. Plenty of muscrats eating clams now but I still don't trust it.Still plenty of big fish to be caught through there though.about half way between 77 bridge and Landsford Sugar Creek dumps in to the river from the left. Good bass'n, catfish and big stripers all over that intersection. Save some shiners for right here...live or dead let the current float them down the rip between Sugar creek and the Catawba. If you run out of shiners put on a blue gill hook, a worm and a bobber and restock your bait bucket with blue gill. Before you throw out a blue gill punch out one eye. Put him under a big bobber...He'll swim eratic in a circle...striper candy. That my friend is how you fish the damn to Landsford. I'm in a Old Towne 16ft "Guide" canoe with seat backs. If you see me, pull up, drink a beer with me for the above info and we're even. Have fun buddy.

Glad you enjoyed it Bronco. I grew up in Mt. Pleasant and still love the saltwater but I'd rather float a river any day. I hope the "masses" never catch on to the thrill of river fishing/floating. We are really lucky to have as many river systems as we do here in SC and a ton of them are virtually untouched. I live in Fort Mill and within a two hour drive in any direction I can catch everything from small mouth and trout to crappie, catfish and largemouth. Those that say "aahhhh, we use fish that big for bait" will never understand the serene silence and beauty of our inland river systems. Let them have their 30' center consoles and twin 350's. I prefer a paddle and my canoe. Nothing wrong with either...just personal preference is all.

| Woodcarver thanks so much. I am planning on coming up this week. my father-in-law & I never made the trip down river. So can we float in a little flat bottom jon boat with a 5 hp motor? i'm planning on coming up wednesday or thursday. does the same info apply or should we plan to fish differently. i think we may start at the boat ramp at the dam and drift to the park and pick up the boat there. i guess we can pull out the boat at the park? it weighs about as much as a canoe and the motor will come right off. How's the river water level? any areas we should avoid? |

I know what you mean Woodcarver. I hate to do this to you.
http://www.riverbassin.com/site/2009/02/shoal-bass/
I lost some sleep the night I discovered this website.
I'm going to the Suwanee River next week to see if I can catch a suwanee bass and check him of my list. If I do I'll post a picture.
I hope you get to go again soon and I hope you don't see any other boats. I used to love fising Mulberry Creek in GA, in the shoals. When I'd get under the I-185 bridge you could see the bass breath rigs headed for West point lake going over your head at 75MPH.
Steady catchin, shoal bass, redeyes, spots and largemouth in the slack water with narry another boat for miles around. A river bass will ruin you for anthing else. Here's a sample. Just a largemouth but a RIVER LARGEMOUTH. (The Captain always takes credit)

Nice fish Bronco for sure...and out of a river too...that was a fun fight I gaurantee. Looks like you have this one all figured out already but...having a cute fishing partner always makes a long hot day on the water a little more enjoyable doesn't it?

Well I made it down to the Suwanee river for a camping/ float trip with the family. We floated about a 6 mile strtch near Live Oak. We stayed in the "treehouse" at the Suwanee Music park. Everybody had a blast BUT. I didn't catch jack. The river is beautiful but it was a slack water section. I didn't get to fish much from my canoe with kids and family, etc. My son did find a nice arrowhead and we found a few fossils. The last day I wanted to do some scouting around so I drove about 10 miles over to Madison Blue Spring State Park. That looked like ideal Suwanee Bass territory. There's a shoaly section of the Withlacoochee river there that looked prime time.

Well the Suwanee bass stays on my list. For now...
